OpenAI launched ChatGPT Enterprise yesterday, and this is actually a bigger deal for professional services firms than the hype suggests.

Until now, you had two choices: use ChatGPT through the free or paid consumer interface (which uses your data for training and has no compliance guarantees), or use the API (which requires technical integration).

ChatGPT Enterprise closes a gap. It's ChatGPT for companies that need security, compliance, and privacy. And for many professional services firms, it changes the calculus on how you deploy AI.

What Changed

SOC 2 Type II compliance: ChatGPT Enterprise has been audited for security and compliance. Your data isn't used to train OpenAI's models. This is a real differentiator for firms that handle sensitive client information.

Dedicated infrastructure: Instead of sharing compute resources with every other ChatGPT user, Enterprise customers get dedicated capacity. Your prompts don't slow down during peak usage.

Advanced privacy controls: Admins can control data retention policies, see who's using what, and audit usage. For firms that need this level of control, it's essential.

Offline capability: Enterprise organizations can download conversations and continue working without internet access (in some cases).

Higher limits: 32K context window (much longer documents), faster response times, and higher usage allowances.

Pricing is typically per-seat per month (around $30/user/month for most customers), with minimum seat requirements that vary by organization size.

Who Should Buy This

Law firms and healthcare practices: If you work with sensitive client data and you need HIPAA or SOC 2 compliance, ChatGPT Enterprise is significantly better than consumer ChatGPT. You get a compliant tool without building your own infrastructure.

Professional services firms with data security requirements: Accounting firms, consulting practices, tax advisors—if your clients care about data privacy (and they should), Enterprise is the safer choice.

Organizations that want a managed solution: You get all the benefits of ChatGPT without needing to manage APIs, integrations, or compliance documentation yourself. OpenAI handles the infrastructure.

Who Shouldn't Rush to Buy

Small firms (under 20 people): The minimum spend is substantial. At $30/user/month, you're easily at $7K-$10K annually before you hit any complexity. For a solo practitioner or small team, ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) might be sufficient if you're careful about data privacy.

Firms that need custom or domain-specific AI: ChatGPT Enterprise is general-purpose. If you need specialized models trained on your firm's data, you'll still need to build custom solutions.

Organizations that already have API integrations: If you've built ChatGPT integration into your existing workflows using the API, switching to Enterprise isn't trivial. You get some added security, but you lose the flexibility of API-based integration.

The Bigger Picture

What's interesting about Enterprise is what it signals: OpenAI is betting on enterprise adoption, not just consumer use. They're building features professional services firms need: compliance, privacy, administrative controls.

This is going to accelerate AI adoption in professional services, because the #1 blocker right now is "we can't use ChatGPT with client data." Enterprise removes that blocker.

It also sets a precedent. Expect Anthropic (Claude) to launch a similar enterprise offering. Expect Google and Microsoft to do the same with their models. Within six months, every AI platform will have an enterprise tier with compliance and security features.

My Recommendation

If you're a professional services firm with 30+ employees and you work with sensitive information, get a pilot going with ChatGPT Enterprise. Even if it's just a 10-person cohort, run it for 30 days and measure:

If the pilot works, expand to your full organization. If it doesn't, you've learned something valuable about how your firm uses AI.

The investment is modest ($10K-$30K per year for most firms), and the upside—a compliant, secure way to deploy ChatGPT across your organization—is substantial.
